Teamsters Endorse Hannemann

Nine unions announce support so far, totaling 33,000 members including retirees

HONOLULU — The Hawaii Teamsters & Allied Workers Union, Local 996, which represents more than 6,000 members in Hawaii and Guam, today announced its endorsement of Mufi Hannemann for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Mufi is an insightful leader and impassioned advocate who will fight for the hard-working men and women of Hawaii,” said Teamsters President Ron Kozuma. “Mufi knows and understands firsthand the needs of working people and their families.

“Mufi gets things done. As Mayor of the City & County of Honolulu, he compiled an outstanding record of accomplishments while keeping prudent fiscal responsibility as the cornerstone of his administration. Through his work with organized labor, and the public and private sectors, he has fostered relationships in business and tourism that have helped Hawaii’s economy. Mufi is the person we need in the House as part of our team in Congress.”

“I have had a long-time association with the Teamsters Union, as my father Gustav valued his membership with the union as a Foremost Dairies employee. As Mayor, my City Hall team and I prioritized TheBus and Handi-Van operations to ensure that Honolulu had one of the best bus systems in America. I am, therefore, extremely pleased and honored to receive this strong and solid endorsement from President Ron Kozuma and the Teamsters in my quest to serve Hawaii in the United States Congress,” stated Mufi Hannemann.

The Hawaii Teamsters represents more than 6,000 members and negotiates 80 contracts with employers statewide and on Guam. The union’s membership includes bus drivers, hospital employees, cement workers, transportation industry mechanics, satellite tracking operators, parcel delivery drivers, cable television technicians, laundry workers, mattress makers, beverage producers and distributors, and bakery employees.
